I Know Nothing!

So I just had a meeting with my Manager regarding a few fires that have been smoking around here.  He was nice enough to keep me informed this time regarding decisions that have been made, and more specifically providing me with a directive that "I know nothing" attitude is perfectly acceptable with staff regarding the matter.

Now, Question 1! If I am "Human Resources" would it not be my responsibility to know about new employees being hired, also the policies and standards of the company regarding HR processes, or how about a directive from management/directors of how they want these things buffered with staff and then enforced.

Answer= Human Resources is actually a very liberal term around here for glorified receptionist.  No I do not need to know when new people are hired as it is now the responsibility of the Manager who hires the person to ensure they receive the necessary paperwork that is locked in my desk.  No I do not need to know the policies and standards of the company regarding HR process as once again the Manager responsible for hiring the new employee will enforce and educate said employee of this information.  Directive had been provided as “What is perfectly acceptable for you to inform staff who come to you with “these types” of questions is that you know nothing and to speak with Manager X, Y or Z”

Question 2!  What is my scope of work, position, title, general job?

Answer= “If you could put together a detailed list kind of depicting what you have done in the realm of each of your days for the last couple weeks that would be great!  Moving forward we will be looking into what each employee actually does do and making detailed scopes of who does what and co-ordinates with who.”

Question 3!  What the hell is going on?

Answer= Uneducated management teams put all together to let staff provide them with information regarding positions and work flow is a dangerous combination.  I know from experience since I hired one of my bosses simply because I didn’t want the blood on my hands from that department any longer.  Now I understand that they are at a point where they don’t even know what is going on so they need us to tell them what is going on in order for them to even come close to being able to restructure and manage a work flow.  But when you have two micro-managers who are naturally control freaks involved in this process this is never going to happen.  There is no team in CONTROL FREAK.  You can never have a functioning team with control freaks involved.  Now what should happen here is A) start with management sitting down and deciding what their jobs and purposes and scopes are.  B) Get the list from employees of what they are handling and hope nothing is forgotten C) then management needs to decide from there what each staff member is to be doing and who they report too.  D) Unveil this new structure and work flow to staff.  From there, guess what you will be able to see!  Who is on bored, who is not on bored, where the short falls and who will be able to pick up what is dropped.

Question 4! Is it wrong to leave out half of the very important but small things I do around here which ensure that nothing gets dropped by operations or accounting as I know I will be leaving sooner than later?

Answer= “I don’t know”… I’m Just Some Girl!

Standards... I can always do better!

Work Place Standards… Whatever happened to those?
This entire entry is going to be about what is wrong with where I work.  I need to vent!
Started working here in 2009 in a building that should have been condemned (has since been torn down). We moved operations to this new place where I was promised A/C… I don’t have A/C.  It’s currently 24.5 degrees in my office.  This should not be legal.  Alternately, in the winter my office gets really cold!
SIDENOTE- I think my co-worker beside me just passed out, she was typing and all of a sudden her head is on her desk... Not the first time so I’ll give her ten to come back I poke her…
Ergonomics is standard in every other office I have worked in.  It is actually part of OH&S programs as prevention of long term injury or pain in office staff.  Since I have started working here I can tell you that my pain has gotten much worse simply due to improper phone mounts, lack of headsets (I have requested a headset a few times and never received authorization for the expense).  My keyboard is not properly mounted; my chair is pretty, but not supportive.  I don’t think I need to go on for this one.
Electricity… now this is something you would assume all offices would require to operate.  You would also think that ensuring you had adequate electricity to operate would be a priority.  Well for almost two years now, my office has been running off of extension cords and UPS’s in order to ensure that the printer, computers and TV’s all can run.
Tripping hazards!  The extension cords in the office are tripping hazards, so are the mats in the traffic areas that move nonstop!  I have nearly fell flat on my face many days due to these mats… Maybe I should just fall… it will even be on video!  Try fighting that LTD claim!
But I don’t have an expensive piece of paper stating I know my head from my ass on these matters… Thank god I have a good attorney should I ever choose to pursue my options.  But what do I know?  I’m Just Some Girl!

Heads From Ass's Should Be Part Of Degree's

So an overview of my career thus far…
I have an expensive piece of paper that says I know what Accounting is as well as all office based software, basic networking and hardware repair.  This was acquired roughly 10 years ago.
I started my own consulting company based around assisting entrepreneurs with setting up their business’ and records of said business for success.  Argument for service is entrepreneurs know their service or product really well, but they don’t know anything else about their company.  Services offered= Admin/Office Organization, Full Cycle Accounting including setting up their accounting manually/digitally for the designated accountant to easily find the information they want, consultation regarding payroll and human resources, assistance with marketing material or general admin. Etc. This started 11 years ago.
From there I worked for a China Based oilfield company where I was mentored by CA regarding black and white accounting as well as grey and red accounting.  Great guy!  I did this for over two years.  That was roughly 8 years ago
I moved forward from there to a Bookkeeper for a property management firm with 6 corporations in two cities.  I tell you, a lot to keep track of!  That lasted more than a year before leaving 6 years ago for a better opportunity.
The better opportunity was a major non-profit organization which needed assistance with organizing and manipulating their scheduling department as they had two unions and non-union staff all employed.  That’s a lot of legal jumble to memorize and work with yet I have amazing references to speak for my accomplishments there.  I was there for the duration of my 9 month contract which at the end they offered me a permanent position which I should have taken instead of moving.
May I point out; I was still consulting while advancing my career.  I was also continuing to study and advance my education.
Once I moved I focused on my consulting but continued to gain experience as a casual employee to the local hospital (which was more like full time as I pulled between 32-45hours a week).  There I continued my knowledge building regarding HR/LRM and administration/management procedures.  Talk about a clicky environment.  Anyways, I did this for three years before deciding to come back to the city.
Where I ended up at this job almost two years ago!  Let’s say it was not my best career move looking at things now.  But at the time the bullshit plate looked great and convincing.  Here I have done the full cycle accounting and payroll, administration, moved onto human resources and labour management, safety co-ordination and administration with the assistance of a consultant, sales quotes, executive administration, general office duties, reception, technical and customer support, really I can do pretty much anything that needs to get done in this office at any time.
So now, I think I have justified that I know my head from my ass… Right?  Agreed?  I think so!  So why is it that my particular management team disagrees with everything I advise them?  Or how about if I provide them with clear information such as the actual labour act I am told I am wrong?  Oh and then there is the part where these managers have absolutely no experience formal or educationally with anything to do with Human Resources.  Over and above that and this may be the very best part of all this, they are going to our designated accountant for further advisement who has told me herself she does not know or understand anything to do with payroll.  So… if you know you do not know the information, and you are aware that you are dealing with something you do not understand would you not educate yourself regarding the matter, or pull into the meeting the staff member who is informed regarding these matters?
Then again, I’m out to lunch, and I definitely couldn’t know anything because… yep that’s right!  I’m Just Some Girl!

What they should tell you in Sex Ed!

What they need to start teaching kids in Sex Ed is the truth and not this in love fairy crap! I mean if they had told me that a 3 year old girl would know how to destroy my house in 3 seconds flat everyday and then expect me to clean it up for her! Or if they had told me that I would have to go to work everyday and put up with other people crap just so that I could come home to deal with a boy who thinks that he can do anything he wants however he wants whenever he wants even after he is asked then told what is really going to happen just so that I could pay for everything he needs, wants and breaks! I know I would have been a lot more diligent about when I chose to have kids!
Don't get me wrong. I love my kids. But I think I have loved them too much for the last few years and need to be a little firmer on my expectations because I am quite tired of being ignored!
So the new protocol is??? Step 1. I ask you to do something. Step 2. You do as asked immediately. Repeat as required. Should there be negotiating, arguing or plain out ignoring me you will now simply go to your room. Done.

Hear me Universe! No More Stupid! Please!

So for a week my “Manager” has been trying to track me down into his office to train me on a new software program.  Turns out… He wanted the reassurance and pat on the back for remembering how to spell my name in the setup of a log in.  Now the funny part to me! He goes to set up my user information in this new fancy system for the re-org (this would be the third system we have shelled out money for and yes they all theoretically do the same thing if staff use them properly) and thinks for about two minutes hovering the mouse over the field for “Title” before skipping over it (almost casually) and just moving on like nothing lol.
So even Management agrees that I’m Just Some Girl!  Go figure.  That’s okay!  Monday is going to be the start of something great! I know it… I NEED it! You hear me universe!!! I’m not asking for much… just a job at a company that has a strict policy about employee abuse!!! Not too much to ask right???

Expaning Horizons!!!

As I have mentioned previously (if you are unaware… you should be reading more lol) I come to work just so that I can be paid to look for another job!  In the past I have only been applying for certain types of jobs with certain pay scales and let’s say government benefits…
Starting today I’m expanding my horizons to anything that will pay the bills with in the province!  Of course I’m still putting my preference to government type jobs but really… I’m starting to get a little desperate I think…  Especially since I now am spending a good 4-6 hours a day looking for a job!  Sadder yet! I also am sending alerts to co-workers for jobs that would be really great for them!  At least I’m not alone in this endeavour!
So what brought this on when everything was going just so great for a few days???  Well I come to work today and get asked by each staff member separately where the management team is.  Where a few of our other staff are?  I have no clue.  Now a big part of my job description is to be informed of this information at all times.  To know how to answer the phone or direct calls or book meetings or, or, or (I can keep going on…) bottom line.  I know nothing.  I’m starting to feel quite useless around here.  I don’t like that I’m not being given the information required to do my job, and I definitely don’t care for the attitude of some of the staff when I don’t know the answers to their questions because it makes me feel incompetent in my job which I know I’m not… I had a friend look at my resume to confirm that I’m not crazy and that it’s a good read!
So, I must get back to my expanded job efforts.  Maybe if I’m lucky I can find a new job by the end of the week???  Nah it’s a long weekend here so it will be at least two weeks.  Either way, I’d like to be out before my anniversary… that way I only have to give a week’s notice!  That would be soooo mean but so gratifying to me!
