So… I have come to the conclusion that I am inevitably bound to my place of employment for many psychological reasons…
1. I have a sense of duty, loyalty and responsibility to one of the owners as when he gave me the job during a very hard time in my life he was more than understanding about my situation, could have gone with another candidate and if he had I would not have most of the things I have today or be as far ahead as I am.
2. He is just a good guy… who has to deal with way too much just due to the gong show he is up against here.
3. At the end of the day I like most of the people I work with, and my paycheque (of course bigger would be better).
So back to my social experiment! For months now, my primary job each day has really been just to defuse staffs who are threatening to quit. I have come to the conclusion that they are all empty threats or cries for attention. But I am starting to wonder if things are starting to escalate now… Staff are no longer threatening to quit or bragging about positions that they are applying or interviewing for… they are now suggesting, plotting and looking for assistance with suicide attempts. Now of course these are all done in joking humour or passing with a laugh at the water cooler (which we don’t have) as most suicides are threatened. But really, if you’re having these discussions on a daily basis with more than one staff member I don’t think a recommendation to EAP is really going to solve the problem. I myself even tried to convince a co-worker yesterday to clean up the mess if I shot myself in the head… The deal was 25% of my life insurance… that would be $10, 500.00 which apparently was not enough. And No! I did not disclose that in the event my death was a suicide that there would be no insurance pay out!
Now let’s dig into this. What really could be going on here to make approximately ten people feel this way about their employment? Well it could be the stress levels in this particular place, however my personal opinion is that the “true” stress level here is really not high at all, I mean it’s not like we are a trauma centre or anything. Could it possibly be that the level of hope for change has completely disappeared? Of course! Now we are onto something. I mean when staff are being told that Management is working hard as a TEAM to restructure and make the required changes to foster a family and team environment for all staff would it not be hard for any intelligent person to believe that statement when we all see on multiple occasions throughout the day a split management team? Could just be that we see certain management members closer to others, or one specific being left out of lunches, golfing afternoons etc. Add on that all the non-management staff are gossiping about what they witness so everyone ends up knowing about each instance.
So… either the Management team thinks we are all stupid and uneducated (which would not surprise me as that is how we are treated) or they themselves are that stupid and uneducated to believe this can go on and not effect moral (I choose option later for obvious reasons).
Then again I am Just Some Girl… so I am probably the one who knows nothing! At least it’s a defense when shit hits the fan!
