So an overview of my career thus far…
I have an expensive piece of paper that says I know what Accounting is as well as all office based software, basic networking and hardware repair. This was acquired roughly 10 years ago.
I started my own consulting company based around assisting entrepreneurs with setting up their business’ and records of said business for success. Argument for service is entrepreneurs know their service or product really well, but they don’t know anything else about their company. Services offered= Admin/Office Organization, Full Cycle Accounting including setting up their accounting manually/digitally for the designated accountant to easily find the information they want, consultation regarding payroll and human resources, assistance with marketing material or general admin. Etc. This started 11 years ago.
From there I worked for a China Based oilfield company where I was mentored by CA regarding black and white accounting as well as grey and red accounting. Great guy! I did this for over two years. That was roughly 8 years ago
I moved forward from there to a Bookkeeper for a property management firm with 6 corporations in two cities. I tell you, a lot to keep track of! That lasted more than a year before leaving 6 years ago for a better opportunity.
The better opportunity was a major non-profit organization which needed assistance with organizing and manipulating their scheduling department as they had two unions and non-union staff all employed. That’s a lot of legal jumble to memorize and work with yet I have amazing references to speak for my accomplishments there. I was there for the duration of my 9 month contract which at the end they offered me a permanent position which I should have taken instead of moving.
May I point out; I was still consulting while advancing my career. I was also continuing to study and advance my education.
Once I moved I focused on my consulting but continued to gain experience as a casual employee to the local hospital (which was more like full time as I pulled between 32-45hours a week). There I continued my knowledge building regarding HR/LRM and administration/management procedures. Talk about a clicky environment. Anyways, I did this for three years before deciding to come back to the city.
Where I ended up at this job almost two years ago! Let’s say it was not my best career move looking at things now. But at the time the bullshit plate looked great and convincing. Here I have done the full cycle accounting and payroll, administration, moved onto human resources and labour management, safety co-ordination and administration with the assistance of a consultant, sales quotes, executive administration, general office duties, reception, technical and customer support, really I can do pretty much anything that needs to get done in this office at any time.
So now, I think I have justified that I know my head from my ass… Right? Agreed? I think so! So why is it that my particular management team disagrees with everything I advise them? Or how about if I provide them with clear information such as the actual labour act I am told I am wrong? Oh and then there is the part where these managers have absolutely no experience formal or educationally with anything to do with Human Resources. Over and above that and this may be the very best part of all this, they are going to our designated accountant for further advisement who has told me herself she does not know or understand anything to do with payroll. So… if you know you do not know the information, and you are aware that you are dealing with something you do not understand would you not educate yourself regarding the matter, or pull into the meeting the staff member who is informed regarding these matters?
Then again, I’m out to lunch, and I definitely couldn’t know anything because… yep that’s right! I’m Just Some Girl!
